Tesla Roadster Flying Car Demo: Flight Height, Price and 2028 Launch

Tesla has unveiled its redesigned, rocket-equipped Roadster electric sports car, demonstrating brief airborne manoeuvres at an event in Texas on October 15, 2026. Developed with SpaceX technology, the vehicle drove upside down along a specially designed ramp, flipped in mid-air and landed back on the ground using cold-gas thrusters.

How High Can the Tesla Roadster Fly?

Tesla has not published a maximum altitude or horizontal flight-distance figure for the Roadster. Its October demonstration showed the vehicle lifting off, rotating in mid-air and returning to the ground, as well as performing a jump over other Tesla vehicles.

These manoeuvres demonstrate brief airborne capability, not sustained flight. Tesla has yet to disclose verified figures for flight duration, stability, operating range or how the system would perform outside a controlled demonstration.

The distinction matters because a vehicle that can briefly lift off the ground is not necessarily capable of travelling between destinations like an aircraft. For now, the Roadster is better described as a car with experimental flight-like capabilities than a conventional flying car.

How Does Tesla’s Flying Roadster Work?

The demonstration featured two key systems: a multi-mode suction system that holds the vehicle against a specially designed surface and cold-gas thrusters that help it perform airborne manoeuvres.

The suction system uses fans and a ground-sealing arrangement to generate downforce, allowing the car to travel upside down along a ramp. The thrusters use pressurised gas to produce thrust, enabling the vehicle to lift off, rotate and land during the demonstration.

Tesla says the thruster system can generate forces beyond what tyre grip alone can deliver. However, its real-world performance, repeatability and safety have not been independently established through publicly available testing.

Tesla Roadster Top Speed and Acceleration

Tesla claims the thruster-equipped Roadster can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in less than one second, equivalent to approximately 97 km/h. The company has also cited a top speed exceeding 230 mph, or around 370 km/h.

The company has not yet published a complete set of final production specifications covering battery capacity, charging performance and other key ownership details.

Tesla Roadster Price: What Will It Cost?

Tesla has not announced the final purchase price of the redesigned Roadster. The original second-generation model was unveiled in 2017 with a proposed starting price of US$200,000, but that figure has not been confirmed for the newly revealed versions.

Tesla’s reservation options list deposits of US$50,000 for Performance and US$250,000 for Thrust. The Rocket version, which includes the full flight system and single-seat configuration, is available by invitation.

These figures are reservation deposits, not confirmed final selling prices. The actual cost of each production version remains unknown.

Tesla Roadster Variants: Performance, Thrust and Rocket

Tesla has outlined three configurations with different intended uses and equipment.

VersionIntended UseKey Features
PerformanceRoad-readyTwo seats, active aerodynamics and multi-mode suction system
ThrustTrack-focusedTwo seats and acceleration thrusters
RocketFlight-focusedSingle seat and full thruster system for airborne manoeuvres

The Rocket version is the configuration associated with the flying demonstration. Its single-seat layout and specialised propulsion system distinguish it from the road-oriented versions.

When Will the Tesla Roadster Launch?

Tesla is targeting 2028 for the start of Roadster production, almost a decade after unveiling the second-generation model in 2017. The project has faced repeated delays, and the latest target should not be treated as a confirmed customer-delivery date.

The original Tesla Roadster, produced from 2008 to 2012, helped establish the company as an electric-car manufacturer. The new model is intended to serve as a high-performance flagship, showcasing Tesla’s engineering ambitions and its collaboration with SpaceX.

Can the Tesla Roadster Fly on Public Roads?

The demonstration does not mean the Roadster’s airborne features are approved for unrestricted public-road use. Tesla has described the Rocket version as flight-ready, but the regulatory status and practical operating limits of its airborne system remain important unanswered questions.

A production vehicle capable of lifting off the ground would need to address occupant safety, propulsion failures, operating environments and risks to pedestrians and other road users. Tesla has not provided enough publicly verified information to establish that the flight system can be used safely in ordinary traffic.

The key takeaway: Tesla has demonstrated a Roadster capable of brief airborne manoeuvres, but its maximum flight height, distance, final price and production-ready capabilities remain unconfirmed. The 2028 production target is the company’s current timeline, not a guarantee of delivery.
