WhatsApp Scam Alert Arrives for Android Beta Users

WhatsApp has reportedly started testing its new WhatsApp Scam Alert feature with a limited group of Android beta testers. The feature is available to some users running WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.26.34.1 and is designed to identify suspicious messages from people who are not saved in a user’s contacts.

Meta announced the feature earlier this month as part of its efforts to help users recognise potential scams without compromising WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption. Scam Alert is optional and uses a machine learning model that operates directly on the user’s device.

WhatsApp Scam Alert Starts Limited Android Testing

According to a report, WhatsApp has begun enabling Scam Alert for a small number of Android beta users.

The feature can be found under Settings > Account and can be switched on manually.

Once enabled, WhatsApp Scam Alert analyses messages received from unknown contacts using an on-device machine learning model. If the system detects patterns that resemble known scam behaviour, WhatsApp displays a warning within the chat.

The warning is intended to give users a chance to make a decision before continuing the conversation. Depending on the situation, they can block the sender, report the account or continue chatting. The alert itself is private to the user and is not shown to the person on the other end of the conversation.

How WhatsApp’s Scam Detection Works

Meta says the Scam Alert system works by downloading a machine learning model to the user’s device. The model then analyses incoming messages from people outside the user’s contacts and checks whether their characteristics resemble patterns associated with known scams.

The processing takes place on the device rather than automatically sending the message content to WhatsApp or Meta for analysis. The system has also been designed to account for situations where a legitimate conversation could be incorrectly identified as suspicious. If a user believes an alert is wrong, they can mark the conversation as trusted. The warning will then disappear, and WhatsApp will not flag that particular chat again.

Users Can Help Improve Scam Detection

WhatsApp is also giving users an option to provide additional information when they encounter a suspicious conversation. Users can choose to share their five most recent messages with WhatsApp, helping the company improve the accuracy of the detection system.

Meta says the machine learning model has been trained using patterns identified from scam conversations that users have previously reported. Importantly, WhatsApp says the Scam Alert process does not automatically report message content to WhatsApp, Meta or another third party. The feature is designed to work alongside the platform’s existing end-to-end encryption.

When Will WhatsApp Scam Alert Reach Everyone?

The current Android beta rollout is limited, so not every beta tester will necessarily see the feature yet. WhatsApp typically uses these staged tests to evaluate functionality before making features available to a wider audience.

The arrival of WhatsApp Scam Alert on beta devices suggests that broader availability could follow, although Meta has not provided a specific date for the general rollout. For now, Android users who receive the feature can enable it from their account settings and use WhatsApp’s warning system as an additional layer of protection when dealing with unfamiliar contacts.
