The pricing is one of the most interesting parts of the launch. The X1 LWB is now the most affordable model in this three-car X1 family, despite being the larger version of the SUV.

For buyers, this turns the usual long-wheelbase equation on its head. Instead of paying more for the extra length, buyers currently get the larger petrol X1 for ₹1 lakh less than the standard-wheelbase petrol model.

Larger Dimensions and More Rear Seat Space

The biggest change is the additional space behind the front seats. The BMW X1 LWB measures 4,616mm in length, making it 116mm longer than the standard X1. The wheelbase itself has grown by 108mm to 2,800mm.

Most of that extra length has been directed towards rear passengers. Rear legroom increases by 150mm, while knee room grows by 109mm. The rear seat also gets improved cushioning and a 15mm longer seat base, while its backrest can recline up to 28.5 degrees. This is where the BMW X1 LWB version makes the most sense for India. The additional length is not simply about making the SUV look bigger. It gives adults more usable rear-seat space and makes the X1 more suitable for families and owners who regularly travel with passengers.

Exterior Design and Colours

The BMW X1 LWB retains the familiar X1 design, including the same basic headlamp and tail-lamp treatment and the M Sport styling package. The longer side profile is the clearest visual difference. The SUV also gets a chrome surround for the large windows, while the standard X1 uses a blacked-out finish in this area. 18-inch alloy wheels are standard.

BMW offers the X1 LWB in four colours: Night Dusk Blue, Skyscraper Grey, Carbon Black and Mineral White. The design changes are deliberately restrained. BMW has stretched the vehicle without making it look like a completely different model.

Cabin Features and Comfort

The dashboard remains largely familiar from the standard X1. It gets a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and 10.7-inch touchscreen, along with asymmetric air vents, a floating centre console and an upright wireless smartphone charging pad.The equipment list includes adaptive LED headlights, panoramic sunroof, powered front seats, a 360-degree camera and a 12-speaker Harman Kardon sound system.

The rear cabin is where the LWB version gets its biggest upgrade. Apart from the additional legroom, BMW has revised the rear seating for greater comfort and added the longer seat base and reclining backrest. There are some omissions, however. The X1 LWB does not get front-seat ventilation or massage functions, while a dedicated rear climate zone and adaptive cruise control are also unavailable.

That is worth knowing before buying because the LWB’s biggest selling point is passenger comfort. The extra space is substantial, but the equipment list does not include every premium comfort feature found in more expensive luxury cars.

Engine, Gearbox and Ride Comfort

The X1 LWB gets a 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine producing 156hp and 230Nm. Power is sent to the front wheels through a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. BMW claims a fuel efficiency figure of 15.5kmpl.

The engine also produces 20hp more than the standard X1 petrol. BMW has revised the suspension tuning of the LWB to focus more strongly on ride comfort. That combination tells us something about the product’s purpose. BMW has not simply stretched the X1 and added a bigger rear bench. The car has also been adapted around the needs of passengers who may spend more time in the rear.

Boot Space and Everyday Practicality

The longer X1 offers 540 litres of boot space, which increases to 1,700 litres with the rear seats folded. That gives the SUV enough flexibility for family luggage and longer trips while retaining the additional rear-seat space that defines the LWB version.

For buyers considering the X1 as a family luxury SUV rather than purely as a driver’s car, this combination of rear space and luggage capacity is one of the more practical reasons to choose the LWB.

BMW X1 LWB Safety and Driver Assistance

Safety equipment includes eight airbags, ABS, electronic stability control and ISOFIX child-seat mounts. The X1 LWB also gets several driver-assistance functions, including automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning and lane departure assist.

A 360-degree camera and parking assistance add another layer of convenience, particularly when manoeuvring the larger vehicle in tight urban spaces. Adaptive cruise control, however, is not available.

BMW X1 LWB Target Audience Strategy

The BMW X1 LWB is aimed at a slightly different kind of luxury buyer. Someone who spends almost all of their driving time behind the wheel may still prefer the standard X1. But families, business owners and chauffeur-driven buyers have a stronger reason to consider the longer version because the additional space is concentrated where passengers actually benefit from it.

The pricing makes the strategy even more interesting. BMW has positioned the ₹49.90 lakh X1 LWB below the ₹50.90 lakh standard petrol X1, effectively making the larger and more passenger-focused version the cheaper petrol choice. That is probably the most important takeaway from this launch. BMW is not simply offering a bigger X1. It is reshaping the X1 around the way a significant number of Indian luxury-car buyers use their vehicles.

The Bottom Line-BMW X1 LWB

The BMW X1 LWB brings a much stronger rear-seat proposition to BMW’s entry-level luxury SUV range. Its 108mm longer wheelbase, 150mm additional rear legroom, revised rear seat and comfort-focused suspension make the difference more meaningful than a simple increase in exterior dimensions.

At ₹49.90 lakh, the pricing makes the story even stronger. The X1 LWB costs ₹1 lakh less than the standard X1 petrol, while offering substantially more passenger space. For buyers who want a compact BMW but regularly carry family or rear-seat passengers, the X1 LWB currently looks like the more compelling X1 to consider.
